Better a deal than no deal

Better a deal than no deal. The damage inflicted on Cyprus by the ineptitude and malevolence of euro-group politicians and the troika is of catastrophic proportions. Cyprus has to pick up the pieces and carry on. Cyprus will not go down the drain. We have good, hard working, adaptable people. No crisis can wipe out the opportunities. The message of troika and the euro-group is loud and clear: Make sure that you do not get into trouble because if you do, and ask for our help, we will make sure it becomes your worst nightmare...And you will get into trouble because we have been rigging the game all along.

European citizens should take a hard look at what the EU has come to under the auspices of the current German political leadership: Disaster Capitalism and Shock Therapy. This time it was Cyprus' turn. Unless the citizens of Europe rediscover what democracy, solidarity and free markets are all about, neither Spain nor Italy, nor France, nor Germany itself will be spared.

Update, 27.3.2012:

Some people just do not get it:

1. Cypriot banks were forced by political decisions in the euro-group to accept a haircut of their Greek sovereign debt holdings in 2011 that amounted to loses of €4.5 billion. This loss comes to more than €4500 per Cypriot citizen. I do not have the data for Germany's contribution but I would be surprised if it came down to anything more than €50 per German citizen.
2. Unlike German banks that were holding Greek government bonds as a speculative investment, Cyprus Banks were rightfully holding their liquidity in Greek sovereign bonds because Greece was one of their major markets. All evidence suggests that German Banks, acting on privileged information from the German Government, unloaded a large portion of their holdings in Greek Sovereign Debt. Then, the German Government demanded PSI (Private Sector Involvement)!!!
3. As a result of this loss Cyprus Banks and the Cyprus Government were subsequently downgraded to junk status, in effect cutting them off the markets for their necessary re-capitalization.
4.  Cyprus had no other option but to seek financial support for its banking institutions, from the euro-group.
5. Instead of the euro-group providing financial assistance for the collateral damage inflicted by their previous bad decisions they decided to go after depositors on the pretext that a lot of them were Russian and that Cyprus' business model is defunct! Cyprus never had a single year of recession from 1960 to 2011 with the exception of the year of Turkish invasion in 1974.
6. This led to a bank run and the paralysis of the Cypriot banking system. At the same time Germany enjoys a lower cost of government borrowing as evidenced by the near zero German Government Bond yield at the expense of Spain's and Italy's which is rising as capital flees from the euro-zone periphery to the core. All along they claimed that Cyprus was not systemic and the bank deposits haircut would not affect other markets!
7. If the euro-group provided all the necessary €17 billion for the required liquidity bail out assistance of Cyprus, the loan contribution of the German Government would have amounted to less than €70 per German Citizen. This is 64 times less that what the euro-group shamelessly charged the average Cypriot citizen for the Greek bail out, but they refused to do it and opted instead to sink Cyprus and the euro-zone into this mess!

Update 28.3.2013:

The German political leadership have better rethink what they have unleashed with their decisions on the bail out package for Cyprus. It is not the Cyprus business model they are proving defunct. This new weapon of mass destruction must be contained and controlled before causing any more damage and suffering to millions of people. I am nobody. I wake up early in the morning and for the past couple of weeks I watch hits coming to this blog from at least 60 countries. The world is watching. Germany has the weight, the interests and the means to make amends and whatever else is necessary. They should just do it. They are adamant. They will not. Germany will not yield to pressure.

Update 29.3.2012: The whole story. An Interview with Athanasios Orphanides

"Though Cyprus only hit the front pages in the last month, its crisis has been years in the making. Athanasios Orphanides was governor of the Central Bank of Cyprus from 2007 to 2012, giving him a seat on the European Central Bank's governing council and oversight of Cyprus' banks. In an interview with The Economist, Mr Orphanides gives his views on how the crisis came about: exposure to Greece and the global financial crisis; decisions by the former communist government (with whom Mr Orphanides had a strained relationship); and flawed decisions by Europe's governments."

I wished Mr. Orphanides co-operated better with the government and exercised better supervision of Cyprus Banks. If the government did not listen he should have resigned in order to at least warn and alarm the public.  I very much doubt that he or anyone else warned the president of Cyprus of the actual exposure of Cyprus Banks to the Greek PSI and the proper course of action. I guess the president thought that the German government had done the job right and arranged for everyone involved to contribute in a fair way for the bailout of Greece. That is no excuse for him. He often expressed thoughts that proved him naive. Now Mr. Orphanides is a professor at MIT. What are the options for the people in the Cyprus financial services industry or the thousands of businesses and individuals that have lost their deposits and will soon have to shut down their business?

Some eurocrats keep repeating that the EU institutions will help Cyprus recover from this. They seem to forget that their job was to prevent this mess to begin with. They forget that their job was to raise a voice when the German government decided to swindle €4.5 billion out of Cypriot Banks for the Greek PSI and subsequently send a bill of €4500 to every Cypriot. They want to forget that their job was to make amends for the previous mistakes and not sink Cyprus into this mess by allowing the German government to demand that Cyprus should pay an extra €6000 per citizen as their own contribution, as a prerequisite for any help.  I very much doubt that by now they have any power or the means to help Cyprus, even if they really want to.

Germany wants to teach Europe who is really in charge.

Joseph Goebbels, Reich Minister of Public Enlightenment and Propaganda,  would be very proud of Dr. Schauble - exploiting the lowest instincts of the German people (racism, xenophobia, class envy and insecurity), aggressively pursuing Germany's economic claims sooner rather than later: The German taxpayer will not bail out the mistakes of rogue banks and governments in the rest of the Eurozone. The Cyprus business model is unsustainable and defunct. It is immaterial that the Cyprus business model never had a single year of recession from 1960 to 2011, with the exception of 1974, a year of war and occupation. It is immaterial that the banks of Cyprus went bankrupt because of German policies demanded the Private Sector Involvement for the bailout of Greece, without the due compensation to the ones unfairly harmed. It is immaterial that the blackmail for an immediate deposit haircut would sink thousands of businesses and individuals into collapse and despair. What matters is that Germany wins. What matters is that Blitzkrieg proved once again to be a great success. Never admit mistakes, never acknowledge ulterior motives. The truth is that denial will not help neither Dr. Schauble nor Germany, neither Cyprus nor Europe..

CONCLUSION

If Germany does not really care about the Euro, why should Cyprus? Cyprus is tiny to do anything about it.

Remember the annexation of Czechoslovakia? Remember the invasion of Poland? Remember how some European nations supported the Nazis. Remember how most of Europe did not raise a voice to great injustice?

Germany seems to be back pursuing the dogma of "Deutschland Uber Alles" inflicting upon what they seem to regard as "inferior" nations unprecedented economic calamity and human suffering.  Continental Europe is once more in a state of complete confusion and disarray unable to react, paralysed by conflicting national interests, disrespect of the principles of democracy, solidarity or legal order, incompetent EU officials and institutions. The USA, UK and Russia should seriously re-consider the means to put Germany back on a short leash before it is too late.

If Dr. Schauble and his gang could pull this one on Cyprus without any European Government or Institution wanting or managing to resist, why should I be surprised if my opinion was banned from the Economist Online? I can imagine what kind of pressure might have been exercised to the Economist from the German Government. No hard feelings. I can understand. Thank you Economist.

Christofias was living in his world of communist dream land. That was no
reason to swindle the Cyprus Banks. The rest of the eurogroup were minding
their own interests. They did not have that much to loose and the PSI was
reducing their own bill. It was not the Cypriot banks that were
speculating...it was the German ones!

Cyprus Crisis

The Germans swindled out of Cyprus Banks  €4.5 billion (€4500 / citizen)  to bail out Greece and they now caused a bank run because they did not want to live up to the single currency basics! Capital is fleeing to the eurozone-core and the ECB is being toyed into implementing bankruptcies and capital controls wiping out billions on the pretext that it is Russian money! It is not our money we are trying to protect. Nor even Cyprus' credibility. It is the eurozone's credibility which is at stake here. We are into a currency union and the European Institutions allow the German government to order the ECB what to do at Germany's benefit. It would have cost them nearly nothing to provide stability but they just would not get it. This is madness, but there is nothing that Cyprus can do to stop them.

This is not about Cyprus any more. Actually it has never been. Cyprus is tiny to do anything about it. Cypriots were made to pay €4500 each for the bail out of Greece and they are now being forced to contribute another €6000 each. All this because the German government would not contribute €100 per German citizen to provide the necessary stability! The only way this could be walked back by now would be to re-capitalise Cyprus Banks with German money and allow anyone to withdraw their deposits. It should not cost the Germans more than €1000 each.

Clarification 26.3.2013: The maximum of  €1000/ German citizen is not a net cost. It would replace deposits fleeing and earn interest assuming a worst case scenario of all €80 billion deposits fleeing to perceived safety. Most of them would end up in eurozone countries anyway. The actual cost would have come down to far less than €100/ German citizen. Such an announcement would not have caused a bank run to begin with and the requirements would have been much much less.

Germany and its brethren satellite partners have been committing hubris for quite some time now. Could the reaction of the people of Europe to the EU’ s bail out formula for Cyprus be their Nemesis?

Let me tell you a story:

In ancient Greece, in line with the primary goal of one knowing himself and finding harmony and balance, Hubris (Ύβρις) was considered a major unethical act. One committed Hubris when he arrogantly overestimated his abilities or strength, defied his mortal nature and other weaknesses, and used his power to humiliate his victim(s) for personal gratification.

Germany has been preaching their superior business model for quite some time now to the point that German politicians, and the German public at large, think by now that Cyprus’ business model is inferior and should be dismantled.  They think that every country should have a high corporate tax rate and that a large international banking and financial services sector, like Cyprus’ is “unsustainable”. They conveniently forget that their own industrial sector is many times multiple of their own domestic demand which means that it is dependent on exports to other countries. In general, they conveniently forget that if Germany is to be making a trade surplus some other countries, like Cyprus, must be making a trade deficit and that if they insist to keeping that surplus to themselves they will be aggravating world (and Eurozone) trade imbalances. If you feel you need to understand what I am talking about a bit better check this or this. Any way, they feel so much superior that they derive pleasure at any opportunity to humiliate weaker countries like Cyprus. They would not care if by giving a haircut to the Greek sovereign debt, in the way they wanted the private sector to participate, they would cause the Cypriot banks a huge loss of €4.5 billion. They would not care if by blackmailing the government of Cyprus to accept their proposals they would damage the reputation of the Cypriot banking sector or set the stage for a bank run, multiplying the original liquidity problem. which was caused by their own previous bad decisions. In this sense they have been committing Hubris.

The Gods would send to the one committing Hubris the Hatei (Άτη) which meant the blinding of the mind. Hatei looks surprisingly similar and fits the modern day concept of “hate”. Hatei would make the one committing Hubris to indulge into more of such acts until he would make a major foolishness or mistake.

The Eurogroup’s bail out plan for Cyprus was a major foolish mistake. In their indifferent and malevolent attitude towards the damage inflicted to Cyprus, they forgot they were damaging the trust of depositors necessary for the functioning of the modern banking system, whereby deposits are lent to long term debtors. If you do not believe me you may read this or this (and watch the related video).

Such a mistake would cause Nemesis, the rage and revenge of the Gods.

The reaction of the worldwide markets and press expresses the rage and revenge of the Gods. Again, if you do not believe me, then watch this or read this.

The Nemesis would then result in the Tisis (Τίσις), the punishment and the destruction of the one committing Hubris. 

That remains to be revealed!

So, our German and brethren satellite partners. Beware how far you want to push this. You may manage to humiliate Cyprus and its people to your gratification, in the same way you have been humiliating Ireland, Portugal and Greece. But your turn will not be far away. We have come a long way since ancient Greece, but the nature of neither human beings nor Gods has really changed!

Update 23.3.2013: Cypriot politicians have finally realized that Cypriots have to cut our losses  and carry on. Just in case in all this noise you missed the signal here it is what happened:

1. German politicians continue to be making a big fuss about the "inferior" Cyprus business model and in their "superior" logic consider it a big sacrifice for the German people to contribute to the bail out package for Cyprus.
2. The EU decided to contribute to the bail out package for Cyprus €10 billion and blackmailed the government of Cyprus into inflicting a €6 billion deposit haircut on Cyprus. This caused a bank run in Cyprus and continues to be a threat for bank runs across the whole of the euro-area periphery.
3. The contribution of Germany to this package is 30% of the €10 billion, i.e. €3 billion. Germany has a population of more than 80 million. The contribution of Germany amounts to less than €40 / citizen. 4. In the EU bailout for Greece, Cyprus Banks were inflicted a haircut on their assets of Greek sovereign debt amounting €4.5 billion. Cyprus has a population of one million. That came to a contribution of €4500 per Cypriot citizen, which they paid without a breath about their loss. That is in addition to the Cyprus' government contribution which I assume was a minor two digit contribution per citizen.
5. In the bailout package for Cyprus, Cyprus' blackmailed contribution of €6 billion amounts to €6000 per Cypriot citizen!

I hope this is an honest ignorant mistake and they now have the courage to admit it and walk it back!

The solution to Euro-zone troubles: Just stop buying German products.

Unemployment in eurozone countries is reaching epidemic proportions. People in despair organise demonstrations from Dublin to Athens. One country after the other have no option but agree to the austerity policies stipulated by troika. Capital is fleeing to British, German or Swiss Banks. They sense the fear and demand more austerity.

The Nobel laureate Joseph Stiglitz warned in his book Freefall  in 2010 that "the notion that cutting wages is a solution to the problems of Greece, Spain and others within the Eurozone is a fantasy". He proposed that "there is a far easier solution: the exit of Germany from the Eurozone or the division of the Eurozone in two subregions". Others warned before him that the Euro was an experiment doomed to failure. Germany did not listen. They have the weight, the interests and the means to do what is necessary, but they opt to protect their own interests against those of Ireland, Portugal, Spain, Italy, Greece or Cyprus. A weaker euro suits them fine: It keeps German products competitive in world markets. The European Union suits them even better: It promotes German products and technologies based on political decisions on how to protect the environment, the workers, the consumers or the security of energy supply, aggravating existing trade imbalances amongst euro-zone countries. German banks, as if by magic, unload their assets in euro-zone sovereign debt, just before a political process is set in motion to give a hair-cut in the debt of the x or y country.

Eurogroup politicians can only agree to the solutions allowed by Wolfgang Schäuble. Eurocrats support budget and pay cuts in member states but they promote budget increases and pay rises for the Commission and other European bodies. The new game is neither corruption nor  greed. Nor even fear. It is hypocricy.

A large proportion of people in Europe feel helpless. There is no one they can trust. But there is a solution that can compensate for all the failures of  the politicians, the eurocrats or the bankers: JUST STOP BUYING GERMAN PRODUCTS. Buy products or services from troubled economies. This will have the same effect as Stiglitz's proposal in Freefall and will help German politicians to assume their European responsibilities.

Οικονομική κρίση: Δυστυχώς εξακολουθούμε να μη μαθαίνουμε από τα λάθη μας

Κάποιοι εξακολουθούν να μην αντιλαμβάνονται ότι η οικονομική κρίση απαιτεί την εξυγίανση του κράτους και ότι η εξυγίανση δεν είναι κάτι που αφορά τους άλλους ώστε εμείς να μπορέσουμε να συνεχίσουμε αυτά που πάντα κάναμε.

Οι ειδήσεις καταδεικνύουν ότι ως κοινωνία έχουμε χάσει την ικανότητα να βρίσκουμε ορθές λύσεις στα προβλήματα που μας απασχολούν:

1.      Η εφημερίδα Πολίτης δημοσίευσε στις 19.7.12 ότι με πρόταση νόμου που κατέθεσαν ομάδα βουλευτών επιχειρείται η παραχώρηση του δικαιώματος σε οικογένειες με τέσσερα παιδιά, ανεξάρτητα αν είναι μόνο αγόρια, ο μεγαλύτερος αδελφός να υπηρετεί θητεία 14 μηνών.  Οι έντιμοι βουλευτές είμαι σίγουρος ότι θα βρουν πολλά επιχειρήματα να στηρίξουν την απόφασή τους, μεταξύ άλλων ότι αδικούνται οι πολύτεκνες οικογένειες που δεν έχουν μόνο αγόρια σε σχέση με εκείνες που έχουν. Η ουσία του θέματος, όμως, είναι ότι η στρατιωτική θητεία είναι ατομική υποχρέωση και όχι οικογενειακή. Η ορθή προσέγγιση θα ήταν να αναλάβουν πρωτοβουλίες ώστε να καταργηθούν όλες οι υφιστάμενες ανόητες εξαιρέσεις και να ασχοληθούν με τα πραγματικά προβλήματα της άμυνας και της στρατιωτικής θητείας. Η ορθή προσέγγιση θα ήταν να σταματήσουν να υποστηρίζουν κοινωνικές ομάδες που απαιτούν στήριξη και εξαιρέσεις ώστε να παρασιτούν  εις βάρος των υπολοίπων. Η τεκνογονία χρειάζεται όντως να ενθαρρυνθεί σε αυτόν τον τόπο. Περισσότερο για εκείνους που θα κάνουν παιδιά, παρά για εκείνους που έχουν ήδη κάνει. Στήριξη χρειάζονται και οι φτωχοί. Σίγουρα όμως, όχι μέσω της υποχρεωτικής στρατιωτικής θητείας! Εάν παραδεχόμαστε ότι η στρατιωτική θητεία επιβάλλει άδικα κόστη στους στρατιώτες και τις οικογένειές τους, τότε η λύση είναι να φροντίσουμε οι στρατιώτες να αμείβονται αξιοπρεπώς ή/ και να τυγχάνουν εκπαίδευσης που θα τους βοηθήσει στην υπόλοιπη ζωή τους. Με αυτόν το τρόπο η στρατιωτική θητεία θα παύσει να αποτελεί καταναγκαστική εργασία ώστε οι διάφοροι να αναζητούν εξαιρέσεις. Ίσως μάλιστα, να βοηθήσει ώστε αυτός ο τόπος να αποκτήσει πραγματικές αμυντικές ικανότητες σε σχέση με τις απαιτούμενες.

2.    Η εφημερίδα Φιλελεύθερος στις 21.7.2012, δημοσίευσε σε άρθρο της με τίτλο «Ψαλίδι στα δημόσια βοηθήματα» ότι αφού η κυβέρνηση αύξησε τις δαπάνες σε δημόσια βοηθήματα από 17.000 λήπτες και €98 εκατομμύρια το 2005 σε 27.000 λήπτες και €240 εκατομμύρια το 2010, θα εφαρμόσει τώρα πρόγραμμα περικοπών, ώστε μεταξύ άλλων το ύψος του βοηθήματος να είναι κάτω από το ύψος των συντάξεων και των κατώτατων μισθών ώστε αυτό να μην αποτελεί αντικίνητρο για εργασία.  Παράλληλα θα διενεργούνται πιο αποτελεσματικοί έλεγχοι που λογικά θα πρέπει να αναμένει κανείς ότι θα αυξήσει το διοικητικό κόστος ...και τις ανάγκες στελέχωσης των αρμόδιων υπηρεσιών. Η κίνηση της κυβέρνησης όντως θα αποτελούσε ορθή κίνηση εάν αυτά γίνονταν σε περίοδο οικονομικής ανάπτυξης όταν οι εξαρτώμενοι πλέον από τα δημόσια βοηθήματα θα μπορούσαν όντως να βρουν εργασία.  Όπως έγραψα και παλαιότερα, η κατάργηση όλων των βοηθημάτων και η αντικατάστασή τους με δάνεια θα είχε πολύ καλύτερα αποτελέσματα.

3.      Η τρόικα, η κυβέρνηση και η αντιπολίτευση θα μειώσουν τους μισθούς των εργαζομένων στο δημόσιο τομέα αφού έτσι χρειάζεται να γίνει. Γιατί όμως να μη μειώσουν και τις υπόλοιπες δεσμεύσεις του κράτους; Γιατί δηλαδή οι επιχειρηματίες των αιολικών ή φωτοβολταϊκών πάρκων ή αφαλατώσεων ή των κτιρίων που ενοικιάζει το δημόσιο θα πρέπει να συνεχίσουν να λαμβάνουν τις επιδοτήσεις ή ενοίκια που συμφωνήθηκαν για τα επόμενα πολλά χρόνια; Κάποιοι Υπουργοί, βουλευτές και άλλοι αξιωματούχοι έτρεχαν να αυξήσουν τις ταρίφες λίγο πριν υπογραφούν τα πρώτα συμβόλαια. Τώρα το μόνο που τους απασχολεί είναι οι μισθοί στο δημόσιο.

4.  Κάποιοι υποστηρίζουν ότι πρέπει να καταργηθεί η χρέωση μέγιστης ζήτησης για τους μεγάλους καταναλωτές διότι το ηλεκτρικό ρεύμα είναι ακριβό. Το μόνο που δεν εξετάζουν είναι ποιος θα πληρώνει το κόστος της εποχικότητας στη ζήτηση ηλεκτρισμού. Η ορθή λύση δεν είναι η κατάργηση της χρέωσης μέγιστης ζήτησης και η μετακύλισή της στους υπόλοιπους καταναλωτές, ωσάν και για εκείνους το ηλεκτρικό ρεύμα δεν είναι ακριβό. Η ορθή λύση είναι η διακύμανση της τιμής ηλεκτρικού ρεύματος ανάλογα με τη ζήτηση ώστε να παρέχονται κίνητρα για μείωση της μέγιστης ζήτησης και εξισορρόπηση της διακύμανσης στη ζήτηση. Ενόσω αυτό δεν μπορεί να γίνει, εκείνο που χρειάζεται είναι η αύξηση της χρέωσης μέγιστης ζήτησης!

Ούτε και οι προτάσεις για μείωση της φορολογίας στο ηλεκτρικό ρεύμα είναι ορθές ενόσω λαμβάνονται ένα σωρό κρατικά μέτρα για εξοικονόμηση ενέργειας. Η ορθή λύση είναι η μείωση του κόστους παραγωγής ηλεκτρικού ρεύματος και η αύξηση της φορολογίας, ώστε να διατηρούνται τα κίνητρα για εξοικονόμηση ενέργειας!


Επικαιροποίηση 15.9.2012: Σύμφωνα με δημοσίευμα του Φιλελευθέρου, η κυβέρνηση επανεξετάζει το θέμα των ενοικίων που πληρώνει το κράτος. Ας ελπίσουμε ότι θα υπάρξει η απαραίτητη πολιτική βούληση, ενάντια σε πολύ ισχυρά ειδικά συμφέροντα, ώστε να έχουν αποτέλεσμα. Υπάρχουν πολλά άλλα που θα έπρεπε να περικοπούν πριν αγγίξουν τους μισθούς του κόσμου. Όσο για τους αηδιασμένους και σοβαροφανείς Μαυρίδες και Μιχαηλίδες  αυτού του τόπου, φαίνεται πως δεν έχουν συνειδητοποιήσει το μέγεθος της αηδίας του κόσμου για όσους υποστηρίζουν ότι τα όσα στραβά συμβαίνουν στη δημόσια υπηρεσία, τη δημόσια παιδεία, τη δημόσια υγεία, την αστυνομία ή την εθνική φρουρά, τους ημικρατικούς οργανισμούς, τις τράπεζες ή την αγορά, οφείλονται στους εργαζόμενους. Οι εργαζόμενοι κύριοι είναι διατεθειμένοι να δεχτούν προσωρινές περικοπές στα ωφελήματά τους ώστε να συνεισφέρουν στην προσπάθεια κάλυψης των ζημιών που προκλήθηκαν από την οικονομική και πολιτική ολιγαρχία αυτού του τόπου. Τα χάλια μας όμως δεν πρόκειται να διορθωθούν εάν οι συντεχνίες σταματήσουν να απαιτούν ισονομία σε αυτόν τον τόπο. Τα χάλια μας θα διορθωθούν όταν αφού αυτοί που ευθύνονται λογοδοτήσουν και υποστούν τις συνέπειες για τα λάθη και τις παραλήψεις τους, υπάρξουν οι απαραίτητες θεσμικές και νομοθετικές ρυθμίσεις (για τις οποίες υπεύθυνοι θα έπρεπε να είναι ο κ. Μαυρίδης και η παρέα του) ώστε να αποφευχθούν παρόμοιες καταστάσεις στο μέλλον.

Επικαιροποίηση 11.12.2012:  Δυστυχώς τα πράγματα δεν βαίνουν καλώς. Τι χειρότερο μπορεί να συμβεί σε μία χώρα εν καιρώ ειρήνης από την κατάργηση προνοιών του συντάγματος στη βάση του δικαίου της ανάγκης; Δεν επικαλέστηκαν όμως το δίκαιο της ανάγκης για να περικόψουν πληρωμές σε άλλες συμβατικές υποχρεώσεις του κράτους πλην των μισθών και των κοινωνικών παροχών! Η παράληψη αυτή είναι το ίδιο τυχαία όπως είναι και η παράληψη αύξησης των φόρων στα πούρα. Η κυβέρνηση Χριστόφια συνεχίζει να επιμένει ανεύθυνα ότι φταίνε περισσότερο όλοι οι άλλοι. Η αντιπολίτευση επικρίνει, περισσότερο  από οτιδήποτε άλλο, το μοναδικό ίσως μέτρο για τη δίκαιη κατανομή των βαρών από τις πρωτόγνωρες οικονομικές ζημιές: Την αύξηση της φορολογίας στην ακίνητη ιδιοκτησία. Οι δεινόσαυροι του ΔΗΚΟ επιμένουν ότι η θεσμική διάπραξη ποινικών αδικημάτων ρουσφετιού από μέρους τους αποτελεί καλή πρακτική μέριμνας προς παραπονούμενους πολίτες και ότι οι άλλοι είναι χειρότεροι! Υπάρχουν καλύτερες λύσεις; Υπάρχουν.  Δυστυχώς, δεν τις εκπροσωπεί κανένας υποψήφιος Πρόεδρος. Ούτε καν η ΠΑ.ΣΥ.Δ.Υ. :(

Οι μειώσεις μισθών και ωφελημάτων δε θα επιφέρουν οικονομική ανάπτυξη

Όπως έγραψα και παλαιότερα η οικονομική κρίση αποτελεί μοναδική ευκαιρία για εξυγίανση του κράτους. Δυστυχώς, εκείνοι που έχουν την ευθύνη για να πάρουν τις απαραίτητες αποφάσεις, πρώτιστα η κυβέρνηση, αλλά και η αντιπολίτευση, αποδεικνύονται κατώτεροι των περιστάσεων και ερίζουν γύρω από τα προβλήματα χωρίς να ασχολούνται με την ουσία: Πως να δώσουν τα σωστά κίνητρα σε αυτούς που επηρεάζονται άμεσα (δημόσιους υπαλλήλους και κρατικούς αξιωματούχους) για να προσφέρουν καλύτερες υπηρεσίες με χαμηλότερο κόστος. Αυτό δε με εκπλήσσει. Δεν είναι εύκολη υπόθεση να λύσεις τα προβλήματα που εσύ ο ίδιος δημιούργησες με προηγούμενες αποφάσεις σου.  Χωρίς να αναμένω ότι θα αλλάξει κάτι, καταθέτω για ακόμη μια φορά τις απόψεις μου: Οι μειώσεις μισθών και ωφελημάτων δε θα επιφέρουν οικονομική ανάπτυξη.

Αυτή είναι η δεύτερη φορά που καμία από τις δύο «ανεξάρτητες» εφημερίδες στις οποίες συνήθως αποστέλλω άρθρα μου δεν με τίμησαν με τη δημοσίευσή του. Το πρώτο μου άρθρο που δε δημοσιεύτηκε ήταν στις 18.1.2005: Τυχόν τελική συμφωνία στην προτεινόμενη επέκταση του ορίου αφυπηρέτησης των δημοσίων υπαλλήλων στο 63ο έτος της ηλικίας, ως έχει, θα επιδεινώσει αντί να βελτιώσει την υφιστάμενη κατάσταση. Βγάλτε τα δικά σας συμπεράσματα για τα πράγματα που διαβάζουμε στις εφημερίδες και το ρόλο τους στη διαμόρφωση της κοινής γνώμης.
